How Do You Describe Your Music?

music_genresAs an independent artist, it’s worth taking the time to figure out an accurate description of your sound. Are you Electro pop? Or R&B? Maybe you’re funk-influenced rock and roll? Or indie singer/songwriter?

Whatever your genre, it’s important to remember that not everyone knows what your music is all about, so how you describe your sound is very important. Often, a potential fan will read about what you sound like before they actually listen to your music. Don’t make them tune out before they tune in.

A description of your sound is useful (and necessary) to include in your bio and on your website and social media pages. It’s also helpful to use when meeting people who ask the ubiquitous question: “what does your music sound like?” Instead of saying “it’s hard to describe,” come up with something good that reels them in. Make your words count.

If you’re having trouble coming up with a description, here are some tips:

  • Don’t know where to start? Use your social media pages to ask your fans what you sound like! It’s a great way to get them engaged in your music.
  • Have a word that you like but feel like it’s overdone? Time to check the thesaurus!
  • Is there a band out there with a similar sound as yours? Check out music publications to see how other bands are described. Is there a blurb that particularly reels you in? Think about why you like that choice of words and how it can apply to your description.
  • Consider your unique selling points. What makes your band stand out? Are there any recurring themes in your music or a certain sound that pops up again and again?
  • Lastly, if you’re totally stuck, it’s worth consulting a music writer. Having an accurate description of your music is incredibly important. Seeing help from a professional might be worth the money.

Once you come up with a phrase that you like, ask for feedback. Put the phrase up on your social media pages and ask your fans to weigh in. Do they like it? Does it make them curious? Do they feel that it accurately describes your sound?

Tell us what you think! Have you recently come up with a description of your sound? Was it hard? Are you happy with it?

Up next: Make a commitment! Do something every day that contributes to your music career.
