As an indie artist, music videos should factor heavily into your business and marketing strategy. Having content on-hand for use on your social media pages and for media outreach (blogs!) is one of the keys to getting exposure. You want people to watch, engage with, and share your content.
You might think that music videos are out of your reach as an indie artist with a budding career. But, it’s entirely possible for you to create killer music videos at all different budget levels. Here’s what it takes:
- Creativity: When creating a video (or working with a videographer), put your heads together. Come up with a variety of creative ideas that will help your video stand out. While you might not have the resources or the time that Kina Grannis had when creating her stop motion Jelly Belly music video, you might be able to come up with something just as creative.
- Collaboration: Videographer Mike Bradley of Visualanties.com says “one of the keys to making engaging content is collaboration.” Have a scene that requires a crowd? Bring in other musicians, friends or family as extras. Then, when it comes time to unveil the video, you have that many more people available to watch it and share it with their networks.
- Use your existing resources: Do you have studio space? Does your aunt have a Victorian mansion in the hills? Does your dad have a vintage car? Ask around and you might be surprised at what you have at your fingertips. Use it to your advantage.
- Have fun: Remember, the video should be a reflection of you and your band. If you’re fun, then have fun making it. That authenticity will come through in the finished product.
Tell us what you think! Have you created a music video? What was your favorite part of the process?
