If, as an indie artist, you thought a Grammy award was out of your reach, think again. Technology has made all types of music infinitely more accessible to the masses, so it’s no surprise that indie acts have now crossed into the mainstream, even nabbing Grammy nominations (and winning).
Who can forget last year’s awards show, with the biggest award of the night, Album of the Year, going to the largely unknown indie band Arcade Fire for their album The Suburbs. The award helped expose Arcade Fire to a mainstream audience and nab tons of new fans (and also a backlash against them, but that’s another story for another post).
Last week, the nominees for the 54th Annual Grammy Awards were announced, with the show slated for February 12th in Los Angeles. This year, indie artists received a large number of nominations, notably in marquee categories like Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Indie folk artist Justin Vernon a.k.a. Bon Iver is up for Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Alternative Music Album. In the Best Alternative Album category, he is joined by fellow (former?) indie acts Foster the People, My Morning Jacket, Radiohead, and Death Cab for Cutie.
Mumford & Sons is up for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song. 23-year-old Dubsteb artist Skrillex is up for five nominations, including Best New Artist, bringing electronic music to the forefront of the awards show.
This year, indies made up half of all nominations. “Of the 387 total non-producer nominations for the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, independents were celebrated with 194 – half of all nominations,” according to The American Association of Independent Music, an organization of independent music labels that promotes business opportunity, provides advocacy and representation, as well as networking opportunities for the independent label community.
