“Sell my music on iTunes,” you say.
Of course, we comply. After we sell music on iTunes for you, want to bet on the hit songs of summer 2013?
“Summer does not officially begin until June 20,” you scoff.
Well…who cares? That’s right – we’re getting real, here – SongCast is calling it early. We’d bet our eardrums that you’re going to be hearing a lot of the following five songs, so quick! Listen and then share with your friends so you can say you heard it first.
5. “Diane Young” – Vampire Weekend
For a song that’s only 2:40, “Diane Young” is easily one of the band’s catchiest and most experimental songs to date. Starting off with funky bass, electro-blips and percussion that sounds like someone snapping, “Diane Young” (get it?) is a clever, fun, remarkable treasure that you will be hearing more of.
4. “Feel This Moment” – Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera
While the lyrics aren’t exactly Shakespeare (“I’m far from cheap, I break down companies with all my peeps”), we actually don’t mind. Calling it now – “Feel This Moment” is going to be Christina’s long-overdue hit. We can already imagine Pitbull’s Miami party beats and ludicrous rhymes in “Feel This Moment” blasting from the speakers at college pool parties across the nation, and we’re surprisingly not mad about it. Give this song a listen – you may be pleasantly surprised.
3. “Can’t Hold Us” — Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Although his fans can’t get enough of this Seattle-based duo, Macklemore seriously bothers hip-hop purists and has been bashed by a slew of respected rap critics. Spin Magazine called “Thrift Shop” a “party track for privileged dweebs”; Vice called it “Bar Mitzvah rap.” Ouch.
Bellyachers aside, “Can’t Hold Us” is a catchy, fitting follow up to “Thrift Shop,” a perfect feel-good summer jam expressing gratitude and unity with his fans and supporters. The rhythmic horn choruses are instantly catchy; Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are most definitely here to stay.
2. “Blurred Lines” – Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell
We’re genuinely surprised this song is not the beautiful musical love child of Prince and Justin Timberlake, but believe it or not, neither artist had anything to do with its creation. Actually, it’s Robin Thicke (sound familiar? He was a big deal for a second in 2002 for his Beethoven’s 5th– sampling “When I Get You Alone”) featuring T.I. and Pharrell. The video, which has already amassed nearly 30 million views since its March 20 release, is a triumph of visual imagery – pastels, dancing Pharrells, and babes with their butt cheeks showing. Glorious! As is the melody.
1. “Get Lucky” – Daft Punk featuring Pharrell
Pharrell, you sly fox, you made it up here twice – you really know how to sell music on iTunes, my friend. “Get Lucky” is the lead single of Daft Punk’s first album in eight years, so the hype surrounding it is obviously huge. “Get Lucky” is the robotic disco funk hit of the summer before the summer has even begun.
So, congratulations! We’ve all finally made it to the time of year where it’s actually encouraged to laze around at the pool and blast pop hits. If our farsightedness and wisdom is on point, these tunes will be on your “summer ‘13” playlist. We called it!
