As an independent musician, your fans are one of your most valuable assets. Not only are they a tremendous source of support, but they can also help provide you with priceless feedback and much needed assistance from time to time. However, as you know, it’s not enough to have one fan at a show here and there. You want to gain their support for the life of your career.
So, you must care about your relationships with your fans and cultivate relationships with them in a way that is mutually beneficial. How? Ask for their involvement in your projects. It’s exciting for them, helpful for you and it will serve as a way for them to become further invested in your long-term career.
Here are some ways to get your fans involved:
- Co-create: Ask them to help you co-create a music video, album art, or t-shirt design. In exchange, give them free tickets to your shows and/or thank them in your liner notes.
- Provide Opinions: Ask your fans to vote on projects like the name of your album or your first single.
- Financial Investment: Ask them to help fund your album or tour by investing money in your career. In exchange, offer them a thank you in the liner notes or an in-home concert.
- Bring friends: Ask your fans to bring friends to shows and reward them with free tickets to upcoming shows or one-of-a-kind merch.
- Feedback: Remember to consider your fans’ feedback. If you act on their advice, tell them that they helped influence your decision.
By getting your fans excited, involved and committed to act, they’ll feel like they’ve invested in your career and will be more likely to support you long-term.
What do you think? Do you have any tips about ways you’ve involved your fans in your career?
