You may know him from his music videos. You may know him from his YouTube raps. You may even know him from his Vine channel, but one thing’s for sure: if you’re looking to promote your music, then you better know him.
His name is Bo Burnham, and he’s so much more than an internet celebrity.
Bo first began melding original content, comedy, and music on the internet in 2006. His homemade videos often featured him sitting before a stationary camera and a keyboard, speaking frankly to his few followers before beginning a hilarious, pun-filled and utterly creative rap or musical ballad. By 2010, Bo had over 70 million followers.
But what does an internet musical comedy sensation have to do with you and your ongoing effort to promote your music? Here is the SongCast 1-2-3.
Don’t be afraid to be funny: While some musical genres may lend themselves more readily to the art of comedy than others, don’t be afraid to incorporate a little humor into your craft. While Bo keeps humor at the core of his albums (“The rap is scattered, it hides its ingenuity/ I gave it this little part to give it continuity”), think about incorporating humor throughout your marketing materials, on-stage introduction, or social media page. It relaxes people, breaks the ice, and can help you grow your fan base fast.
Expand your horizons: Though his initial stage was YouTube, Bo didn’t keep to one channel (or one art form) for long. During the next few years, Bo experimented with stand up, social media networks like Vine (we’ll talk more about social media in a moment), and finally, writing and creating a film alongside the highly acclaimed Jud Apatow. While your professional goals may center much more around music than Comedy Central premieres, don’t be afraid to expand your horizons. Consider ways to market yourself that are outside the norm. Produce, write, dance, perform: creativity isn’t limited to just one outlet.
Social media, social media, social media: We’ve stressed it before and we’ll stress it again: utilize social media. An example? In 2006, Bo began uploading his songs to YouTube, mainly for his brothers’ and friend’s enjoyment. Just a few years later, he was asked to perform at the official YouTube Live ’08 Event, introduced by Katy Perry herself. Not too bad, huh? We didn’t think so.
So the next time you’re wondering “How do I promote my music?” try thinking outside the box. Grab a video camera, sign on to Vine, write a creative status…or just watch a few, incredible Bo Fo’Sho music videos. Think of it as a learning experience.
