Plenty of acts have “gotten by” by recycling old ideas and material for listeners, but those who’ve truly succeeded have done so by being different in some way. They inject new ideas into old material, or blend in elements of multiple styles to create a unique melodic sound.

Diversity in music marketing, recording, and performance comes in plenty of different forms. Sure, visual diversity is one consideration. There have been bands that have included widely multi-ethnic performers, or who have deliberately dressed in clashing or idiosyncratic styles.

But highly visual bands face some uphill challenges, not the least being that they lose a large chunk of their appeal without the visuals. There’s probably a reason V-Kei never escaped Japan and into larger world popularity.

Diversity in sound is another great hook for music marketing. After all, if a band is releasing anything longer than an EP, it really needs to have more than one sound to hold people’s interest.

  1. Go multi-genre. Include a few different distinct styles of songs in your gigs.
  2. Learn more instruments, rotating which ones are used for different songs.
  3. Expand your production to broaden your sound or create new soloing opportunities.
  4. Add instrumental tracks. (Imagine Dark Side without “On the Run” or “Any Colour You Like”…)
  5. Play with moods, and sequence your album to take the listener on an emotional trip.
  6. Experiment with length. Try twenty-minute epics, or two-minute confections.
  7. Add spoken word, poetry, or dramatic bits.

As far as your words go, diversity in your song topics is also a great way to expand your sound. After all, even Euro-metal acts can’t sing about Middle Earth all day. Touching on a range of topics will also increase your potential appeal, giving you another promotional boost.

Diversity in your sound and image will always help your music marketing, especially when it’s combined with strong online promotional strategies!
