It’s like Bob Dylan said: The times, they are a-changin. 2014 is already halfway over. Your band’s likely already hit some important milestones this year—did you get your music on iTunes, for instance?—but there are only six months left until 2015! What do you want to have accomplished by then? What memories do you want to have made?
Stuck? We have some ideas. Here are a few unforgettable milestones that any young band should be eyeing. Knock out these four ‘first times’ before the end of the year, and you’ll guarantee that 2014 will be one for the books.
1. The first time you see someone visibly moved by your song(s)
It’s hard to plan for this one in advance, but trust us, you’ll never forget it once it’s happened. There’s nothing like watching a person truly moved by your music. This can be tears, a smile, or even just a faraway look—there’s no question that you’ll know it when you see it.
2. The first time you all serenade someone together
Serenades can be a lot of fun. You guys are a band, right? And you’re still young-ish, so at any given moment one or more of you is probably in love. Get out there and do something about it! Go throw rocks at that pretty girl’s window, and sing her one of your songs.
3. The first time you travel more than 100 miles for a gig
Road trips are always a blast, right? But road trips with your band—those are really something else. The opportunity to embark on one is definitely worth the effort of booking a gig that’s well outside your typical comfort zone. It doesn’t even have to be a large gig! The destination isn’t what counts, here; it’s the journey.
4. The first time you guys sit down and watch “The Wall” all the way through
Okay, so you might not understand much of this movie, but you sure as heck won’t forget it. There’s probably no more classic ‘band movie’ than this, as incoherent as it is, and watching it together is a great bonding experience for young artists. If “The Wall” isn’t to your liking, feel free to follow it up with something cheerier, like that Jonas Brothers movie.
