Market with iTunes – Getting started!

One of the most common questions ANY indie musician tends to ask is, “How do I get my music in iTunes?” As by far the biggest player in the downloadable music market, accounting for roughly 2/3 of all digital music sold, iTunes exposure is a must for any artist who wants to sell tracks.

So, how do you make iTunes part of your online music sales? Well, like most things in life, there’s a hard way, and an easy way!

Two Ways To Put Your Music On iTunes

I – The Hard Way

If you’re the DIY sort, there’s nothing stopping you from handling everything yourself. Here’s the basic process:

Step 1: If you (somehow) aren’t in Apple’s system already, you’ll need an Apple ID along with a credit card number on file.

Step 2: Sign up with Apple Connect. The application process allows you to define everything about your content, including which types of media you’ll be selling. Why not add some music videos to your online offerings?

Step 2 ½: If you’re not a US citizen with a Social Security Number, you need a US Tax ID. You can apply at the IRS website, for a fee.

Step 3: Get the relevant barcodes. You’ll need both Universal Product Codes (UPC) and International Standard Recording Codes (ISRC). To get ISRC codes, you have to sign up with your national musician’s guild, like the RIAA, which costs a fee.  UPCs come from private providers, such as Nationwide Barcode, again for a fee.

Step 4: Start uploading, while pondering how to write your own marketing materials.

II – The Easy Way

Step 1: Sign up with Songcast Music.

Step 2: For a flat fee of $5.99 per month, and $19.99 per album, we handle everything else.

Step 3: Profit!
