Getting great PR as a musician is key if you’re trying to make it big. Talking to the media and knowing how to promote your music are two invaluable skills every musician needs, so we have a few PR tips for you here at SongCast.
When composing a press release, keep it brief and in third person.
Members of the media do not want a novel about your band in their inbox. Try to keep it to one page (two, tops) single-spaced, and avoid using “I” or “we.”
Include a photo and link.
Some journalists prefer not to receive links to your music until asked for them, but it’s always a good idea to include a link to your band’s professional website, along with a photo of the band (also professional-looking).
Be confident but not too pushy.
Be clear about your band’s history and accomplishments without being cocky. Confidence is a definite plus, but you don’t want to throw every landmark moment in their face. Make it clear you know what the band has done and is capable of achieving.
Make it catchy and memorable.
Try to infuse some humor in there, as it keeps the reader’s attention. Don’t be too outlandish in the press release, but don’t make it boring.
Build connections.
Share any articles or news coverage about your band on your social media platforms. Create and maintain relationships with your PR and journalism contacts, as this will put out the good word about your music and your reputation.
Follow up.
Consistency in the PR world (and the music industry) is key in learning how to promote your music. Following up with your connections in a logical time frame is key to reminding them your music is worth covering.
Proofread.
Spelling and grammatical errors will reflect poorly of the band, so check over your press release several times before sending out the final copy. Also, make sure to put a catchy subject line on it.
Be patient!
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your press connections. Don’t go overboard sending out press releases to the media.
