1 – Make friends with music bloggers.

If you’re too small for radio, start targeting music bloggers, especially those with their own podcasts or YouTube channels. If you can get a couple moderately-popular bloggers to mention you, that translates into a big popularity boost.

2 – Build buzz.

Even if you’re a small indie artist, you can still build buzz for your releases as long as you’ve got any social network contact at all. Start releasing preview teasers, or give out a free “B-side” track from the album a week or two ahead of time.

Getting your fans excited about your next release ahead of time will drive your music distribution and sales.

3 – Make “Limited Edition” physical bundles.

While some folks are still selling physical albums alongside digital, the sales of traditional albums are pretty much in freefall. For physical music distribution, we suggest focusing on premium packages.

Bundling a CD or LP with merch or exclusive behind-the-scenes materials creates a great package for your biggest fans. A limited-ed remix/outtakes disc is another option, although it’ll be on The Pirate Bay five minutes after release.

You could also consider novelty cases. One plucky artist a few years back even packaged his album within a working portable Theremin.

4 – Get in every online shop.

While it’s true that iTunes is the industry leader, don’t focus solely on Apple’s giant. Every online music store has its own audience, and the potential to connect you to a new niche who’ll enjoy your tunes.

Since it costs very little to get listed in all the major online stores, there’s really no reason not to.
