Goal Setting For Musicians: Make a Plan

You have so many ideas, right? Ideas about what your album should sound like, where yougoal_setting_for_musicians should play, what your posters should look like, who you want to collaborate with and likely much more. Now that we’ve given you an overview of marketing for independent artists, you have to step back and set some goals. It’s time to make a plan.

Budget: Typically, you’ll need to record an album, have the cover art designed, create a website, film a video, and book an album release show, at the very least. Do you have the money to cover all of these things? Help yourself achieve your goals by setting a budget for each line item, and determining how much money you’ll need in total before you begin. Then add 10% for incidentals.

Timeline: After you’ve created a budget, determine a timeline of when you’d like your album to be completed, your website to launch, your video to drop, etc. Set a timeline that allows you to achieve your goals, but is also flexible enough to bend in case your graphic designer misses a deadline or your videographer needs more time to edit.

Pre-planning: Consider that your marketing and press need to begin their planning at least three months prior to the release of your album, especially if you’d like reviews in magazines. Plan your timeline to coincide with your marketing and press initiatives.

Overall, the key is to be focused, and to create a plan that is flexible. Think about ways that you can get the most bang for your buck in everything you do.

Do you have a budget, timeline and marketing plan? If so, was it easy for you to develop? Have any tips you’d like to share?
