Using Craigslist For the Artist

You’ve used it to find a new couch. Maybe even to find a new roommate to sit on your new couch. But have you considered that Craigslist is also a great resource for independent artists? From new collaborators to last minute gigs, Craigslist can be a fantastic place to find:

  • New band members
  • Potential collaborators
  • Gigs (and promote them)
  • Recording studios
  • Producers and recording engineers
  • Music video production
  • Rehearsal space
  • Logo and web designers
  • Marketing and PR

…and more!

Craigslist can come in handy if a band member is unable to make a show. At the last minute you can find a fill-in on CL. If your music video director is too busy, you can search for a new one on CL. If you’re looking for potential collaborators to take your music in a new direction, look for a new partner on CL.

And if you’re on a limited budget, also consider using Craigslist to barter for services. If you can provide another artist with web design services, consider bartering your work in exchange for studio time. Or barter your rehearsal space for some mixing and mastering work.

If you’re trying to promote an upcoming show, Craigslist is a great place to get the word out. Post your show in the “event” section and share that link on your Facebook page and via Twitter, in addition to your typical show outreach.

As an independent musician, it’s important to utilize any and all resources that you can—especially the recourses that are inexpensive or free. Use Craigslist to your advantage, but remember, as with everything on the web, use your best judgment when contacting people you haven’t yet met in real life.

What do you think? Have you used Craigslist before? What was your experience?

Some really cool ideas here, I’m going to post out a few ads tonight and see how it goes.

Might be a cool way to get gigs.
