Interviews with Indies: Meet Kat Parsons

Mike Wright

, Spotlight

Born in Vienna to opera singer Darrell Parsons and recording artist Julie Parsons, indieindie_musician artist Kat Parsons grew up immersed in music, studying piano and later majoring in theatre at Northwestern University. Since the 2005 release of her fan funded (to the tune of $18,000) album No Will Power — which was distributed nationally by Cleopatra/Navarre — Parsons’ career has been on overdrive.

From the cover of Music Connection magazine, to winner of the Acoustic Live competition (beating out more than 600 musicians), Parsons’ talent and pure passion helped make No Will Power runner-up for Album of the Year at the 2005 DIY Music Festival, nabbed her coverage in Billboard, Boston Globe, Washington Post (“a fiery spirit…confident, dynamic songs…”), The Onion, and more.

Parsons is back in the spotlight with the newly released EP Talk To Me, which will be followed by the release of OH!, and It Matters to Me, later this year. SongCast recently sat down with Parsons to learn more about her music, her successes and her life as an indie artist:

Q: What are some of your biggest accomplishments?

A: The biggest accomplishments by far are when a song I write connects with someone and moves them.  I think no matter what I “accomplish”, these will always be the most rewarding moments of being an artist. That said, I’ve gotten to have some pretty cool experiences through music – on the cover of Music Connection, played on KCRW, and performed in 22 countries.

Q: What is it about you and your music that’s helped you stand out and make a name for yourself?

A: I’m not sure.  I try to be the most “me” as possible and trust that has both similarities and differences from people.  I guess I think we are all one-of-a-kind, so if we just act like ourselves, our uniqueness comes out and ironically, it’s how we find shared experiences.

Q: How important has social media been in your success?

A: I’m not sure.  Man, I’m the worst interviewee! :)  Social media makes it easy to connect with people on a certain level, though nothing can take the place of a live connection.  I actually really love writing on FB and exploring other people’s lives….I think there is a part of me who is a closet anthropologist.  I love finding out what makes people tick and how people survive and thrive and live and struggle and triumph….I love the human condition. So as not to get too deep on you, I will tell you that my most recent popular post was about condiments.  Very deep.

Q: How do you acquire new fans?

A: Live shows seem to forge the deepest connection.  I’m also experimenting with other ways to let people know about my music.  I’m working with Arien Rozelle at Feeling Anxious PR and we are focused on getting reviews and driving traffic and inviting people to download my new single free.  I’m playing with some Facebook Advertising.  And I am working with fellow singer-songwriters to support one another and share each other’s music with fans who we think would dig it.

Q: What advice would you give to anyone interested in pursing a music career?

A: Always stay connected to what you love about it.  It can sometimes get overwhelming and requires a lot of motivation and I think it’s important to spend a good percentage of your time doing what you love (lest you get lost in the computer!:))
