5 Tips to Build Your Online Reputation

online_reputation_managementAs an indie artist, your reputation is one of your most valuable assets, so keep a close eye on it. Many decisions are made based solely on your reputation, and increasingly, your online reputation. If you don’t have much of an online rep to rely on yet, here are five tips to help you build it up:

  1. Educate yourself about social media: In order to create and maintain a good online reputation, you first have to understand the ins and outs of social media. It’s necessary to up your knowledge about blogs, domain names (you should have www.yourbandname.com or www.yourfirstandlastname.com), and social profiles like Facebook and Twitter that can help you build your fan base and encourage positive interactions.
  2. Create Content: What is content? Blog posts, videos, tracks, music, etc. If you don’t have anything online to share, you aren’t giving people a chance to talk about you. Start creating and sharing!
  3. Get reviewed: Make sure your music is available online for purchase or download in forums that allow reviews. If your music is up without any reviews, enlist your friends to share their thoughts. Reviews are very important in reputation building.
  4. Monitor the buzz: Get a heads up on what people are saying about you by monitoring the conversations in which your name appears. Make it a habit to conduct ‘vanity searches’ online: you should Google your name and your band name on a regular basis. Set up Google Alerts to notify you when new results come in.
  5. Maintain a good offline reputation: If you maintain a good offline reputation, your online reputation will follow suit. Make sure your music is up to par and you practice business in an ethical manner both online and off.
