Define “successful”. In my terms, I’m in a band, we have released our debut original album and its available to the world. We sold several copies and are still selling in the digital arena around the world to people we have never met. Are we making money? No. Are we making music and influencing people? Yes. In this way, we are extremely successful because to us, it’s not about the money, but about the music. I feel if you get caught up too much in the money side, it negatively impacts your relationships with the band, and your musical talent/abilities because you can loose sight of what’s really important. In all cases, it has to be about the music. After all, focusing on the music makes you a better musician which leads to good music. Good music will sell itself and if its good and you stick with it, the money will eventually come later.
