The Best Album Covers of All Time

Selling_MusicHere’s a quick quiz. Have you ever asked yourself the question, “How do I sell my music on iTunes?” Is every surface of your notebook, your napkin, the back of your hand covered in ink-scribbled lyrics? Can you even remember the last time your fingertips weren’t covered in callouses?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then congratulations! You’re probably a musician.

And if you are, in fact, a musician you’ve also probably spent more hours than you can (or for that matter, want to) count engaging your band mates, your friends, your exhausted, eye-rolling family in the Great Musical Debate: who has the best album cover of all time.

“Led Zeppelin, hands down,” says your resolute drummer.

“Nah, man, it’s gotta be the Eagles,” says your best friend on the West Coast.

“One Direction!” shouts your kid sister…we have nothing to say about that.

But for those of you who are still undecided, we feel your pain. From the Grateful Dead to the Rolling Stones, the list of epic album covers is seemingly never ending. But, fellow musicians, after months of dispute, we’ve finally been able to narrow it down (in no apparent order – we’re not that good). Here is the SongCast list of the top 3 best album covers of all time:

  1. Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon: Though the incredible illustration of a ray of light passing through a prism may now be over done on too many a screen tee, there is almost nothing more classic than the instantly recognizable 1973 cover. Stark and simplistic, if The Dark Side of the Moon doesn’t make the top 3, it’s no top 3.
  2. The Beatles – Abbey Road: Though you feel the urge to throw your laptop across the room every time you see another Facebook “friend” hopelessly and painfully reenacting the famous 1969 cover, you know in your music—loving heart that you just can’t argue that Abbey Road is anything less than iconic.
  3. Madonna – True Blue: The 1986 album shows the Queen of Pop at her finest – confident, sleek, blonde, and beautiful. Though overwhelmingly simplistic compared to many of her other album covers, the in-your-face beauty of the cover mimicked the in-your-face success that True Blue demanded as soon as it was released.

So the next time you find yourself debating which album cover is truly the best or time and time again asking yourself the question “How do I sell my songs on iTunes?” just remember – you’re not alone. You’re a musician.
