Online music marketing is critically important to any indie artist. Most of your promotion and outreach will be centered around your website, so you need to ensure it’s doing everything possible to drive your music sales.
In our opinion, there are four elements that are absolute must-haves on your website.
Four Things You MUST Include On Your Artist Website
1. Links To Buy Your Music.
OK, maybe it’s stating the obvious… but your website is going to be one of your main hubs of visitor outreach and online music marketing. Someone visiting your website should be given ample opportunity to purchase your music through as many stores as possible.
While perhaps not a necessity, we also strongly recommend at least a couple free downloads as demos. Once your music is on someone’s phone, even a single track, they’re far more likely to look for more.
2. Detailed Band Bios
Your personal attitudes and appearances are vital for musical success. While artists have occasionally gotten away with having deliberately-mysterious personas, broadly speaking, it’s MUCH better to be open about your background, personality, and attitudes. Musical success is based on personality, as much as performance quality.
3. Plenty Of Fan Interaction
Whether it’s message boards, chatrooms, links to social media like Soundcloud, or any other interactive elements, these are a true must-have. A static website that leaves fans little or no way of communicating with you will drive fans away. They WANT to be part of your music and, at least in a small way, part of your life. Give the people what they want.
4. Ongoing Or Serialized Elements
You want to give people a reason to come back to your site. Elements that are consistently updated, like blogs, are a great way of doing this. Or, if you’re making a new album, keep a video diary that’s updated once a week. It keeps you alive in people’s minds, even if you’re in between major releases.
