How To Encourage Other Young Musicians!

“Role model.”

For most musical artists, it’s a love-it-or-hate-it situation. Some revel in their ability to be a trendsetter or positive influence on younger listeners; others fear the extra responsibility that comes with the job.

Either way, it’s indubitable that one of the biggest sources of musical inspiration for young musicians are acts already on the stage. Even as you likely have your own list of acts that inspired your music, so too you may become the idol that future stars dream of opening for.

And if you love music, often, the best thing you can do is share that love with your younger listeners!musical_inspiration

Being A Source Of Musical Inspiration To Young Fans

1 – Give Demonstrations.

Any musical artist may -knowingly or not- become teacher to a younger generation. Great technical performers of the past, like Jimmy Hendrix or Freddy Mercury, are studied heavily by their fans.

So, if people are interested in your technique, give ’em what they want. You might make demonstrations part of your pre- or post-show.

Release videos. Hall-of-Famer Mike Portnoy once released a three-hour video of nothing but his Dream Theater drumming, with cameras on each drum. This was even something his fans had pretty much demanded!  (Even Portnoy thought it seemed a bit egotistical.)

2 – Write About Music.

No, it’s not like “dancing about architecture.” Many of the most important musical artists in history have supplemented their performances with books and articles on music theory. These are invaluable for young musicians looking to hone their style.

It’s a great way to be seen as a “serious” artist who wants to contribute to music in general.

3 – Succeed.

Nothing inspires like success, as the saying goes. We know some of you may dislike the idea of being a role model, but honestly: Making it big in music without destroying your health and/or finances in the process is probably the best musical inspiration you can provide for young listeners.

No one’s asking you to walk the straight and narrow. Just remember that Iggy Pop is the exception, not the rule.
