Featured Artist Interview: Wagstar

Mike Wright

, Spotlight

We’re always looking for new ways to help promote YOUR music. Check out this week’s Spotlight interview with Wagstar.

What’s your first musical memory?

When my dad was home on leave from the Royal Navy it was a treat for me and my brother to get picked up at the end of school in a Car!! He had just bought “Wired For Sound” By Cliff Richard and I clearly remember “Wired For Sound” (on tape) blasting out going down the road, I was blown away by the drums, the intro to that song is amazing.

What artist inspires you?

I was brought up on Cliff Richard and John Denver so I like their style of music (not so much Cliff’s single choices, more of his album songs except, “Wired For Sound” “Somepeople” “My Pretty One”) but as I got older I got into Contemporary Country, it’s basically Pop/Rock music but with a much broader topic range, Pop is usually about Love, whereas some guy in Country will sing about his Pick up truck! I found that refreshing and it set me free from Love songs!

What’s your latest track or album?

The latest track is called “It’s Over” and it’s basically an Anti-Love Song as it is about a guy who’s had enough and wants out of his relationship, we’ve all been there but there’s not many songs about it! I’m working on a new one right now called “Drinking Beer” and it’s about some friends going off to the pub for the night.

What song or album do you HATE?

Anything by the Police, R.E.M. I currently loath Adele (it makes me unpopular I know but that’s my opinion).

What’s a song or album everyone should be listening to right now?

Rodney Atkins “Take A Back Road” some great fast paced tracks and some real heart warming ballads, it’s got a great balance.

What profession would you choose if you couldn’t choose music?

Formula One driver, all the thrills and danger of speed without the tickets.

Tell us more about your local scene.

I’m not engaged in the local scene at all.

As a performer, what would be your ‘perfect’ live experience?

Getting it right

What aspect drew you to the particular genre of music that you now perform/write?

Passion, plain and simple.

Share one personal event in your life that greatly influenced a song/album that you have created during your musical career.

An horrendeous row with my wife about something I was clearly in the wrong for (and I know I was in the wrong because she told me I was) and it led to the writing of my Song “Why Don’t You Just Listen”
